With 5 players, play Mafia with 1 Mafia member, 1 Doctor, 1 Detective and 2 Civilians, and have a sixth person moderate if you can. The one rule tweak that matters most at this size is a peaceful first night: the Mafia wake up, but nobody dies until night two. Without it, the town gets a single vote before the game is over.
Here is why small games break, how to fix them, and what to do when you only have 3 or 4 people.
Why small Mafia games are hard to balance #
Mafia is a race between night kills and day votes. With 1 Mafia member and 4 town players, and no Doctor saves, the game goes like this:
- Night 1: Mafia kill one townsperson. 1 Mafia, 3 town left.
- Day 1: The town votes. If they miss, 1 Mafia, 2 town left.
- Night 2: Mafia kill again. 1 Mafia, 1 town. Mafia win.
So the town has one vote to find one person among four suspects, with only one night of Detective information. That’s too harsh. With 2 Mafia at 5 players it’s worse: the Mafia win after the first night and one missed vote. Small games need help.
The best 5-player setup #
| Role | Count |
|---|---|
| Mafia | 1 |
| Doctor | 1 |
| Detective | 1 |
| Civilian | 2 |
Two town power roles give the town a real shot, and a single Mafia member stops the game from ending on night one.
Rule tweaks that make small games fair #
Use one or two of these, not all of them.
1. A peaceful first night #
On night one, the Mafia wake up but don’t kill. The Detective still investigates. The town then gets a full day of talk with one piece of real information. This adds a whole round to the game.
2. Let the Doctor protect themselves #
At 5 players the Doctor is often the Mafia’s first target. Allowing one self-save per game keeps them in play. The trade-offs are in can the Doctor save themselves.
3. Don’t reveal roles on death #
If the Mafia kill the Detective and everyone learns it, the town’s best clue dies with them. Hiding roles until the end keeps the Mafia guessing about who’s left.
4. Play best of three #
Five-player games are short, often under 15 minutes. Play three in a row and rotate the moderator, so nobody feels a single bad vote cost them the evening.
Setups for 6 and 7 players #
| Players | Mafia | Town roles | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | Doctor, Detective, 2 Civilians | Use a peaceful first night |
| 6 | 1 | Doctor, Detective, 3 Civilians | Works with standard rules |
| 7 | 1 | Doctor, Detective, 4 Civilians | Swap a Civilian for a Jester for more bluffing |
| 7 (experienced) | 2 | Doctor, Detective, 3 Civilians | Hard for the town. Don’t reveal roles on death |
At 7 players, a Jester is a good addition. The town has to think twice before every vote, and the game lasts longer as a result. For every size up to 20, see how many Mafia for 10 players.
When there’s no one to moderate #
A small group often can’t spare a moderator. Your options:
- Rotate the moderator each game so everyone plays most rounds.
- Use a moderator app so the person running the game has less to track and gets through each night faster.
- Pick a game designed without a moderator. One Night Ultimate Werewolf from Bezier Games is built for 3 to 10 players with no moderator and no elimination, and its companion app for iOS and Android narrates the night. We compare it with the classic game in One Night Ultimate Werewolf vs Werewolf.
What to do with only 3 or 4 players #
Classic Mafia doesn’t work with 3 or 4 people. With 1 Mafia and 3 town, the first kill leaves 1 against 2, and one missed vote ends it. Better options:
- One Night Ultimate Werewolf starts at 3 players, and Bezier Games puts a round at about 10 minutes.
- Wink Murder. One player is secretly the murderer and “kills” others by winking at them. A victim waits a moment, then dramatically drops out. Everyone else tries to catch the wink and accuse the murderer. It needs no moderator and works with 4 people.
- Wait for more friends. Mafia gets much better from 7 players up.
Running a 5-player game on one phone #
Mafia Helper supports games from 5 players up, and its “Small Mafia” preset for 5 to 7 players is the setup above: 1 Mafia, a Doctor, a Detective and Civilians. The Werewolf version is 1 wolf, a Seer, a Doctor and Villagers. Every night action has a skip button, so a peaceful first night is one tap, and a switch in the night screen lets the Doctor protect themselves. The app doesn’t go below 5 players, so for 3 or 4 people, use a game built for that size.

Frequently asked questions #
Can you play Mafia with 5 people? #
Yes, with 1 Mafia member, a Doctor, a Detective and 2 Civilians, plus a moderator. Use a peaceful first night so the town gets more than one vote. Expect short games and play several in a row.
How many Mafia should there be with 6 players? #
One. Two Mafia at 6 players leaves the town needing to hit both Mafia with its first two votes, which rarely happens. One Mafia member against a Doctor, a Detective and three Civilians is balanced.
Can the moderator play in a small Mafia game? #
Not fairly in the classic game, because the moderator sees every role. Rotate the moderator each game instead. For 3 or 4 people, choose a game like One Night Ultimate Werewolf that has no moderator.
What’s the minimum number of players for Mafia? #
Five players plus a moderator is the practical minimum, and six or seven is noticeably better. Below five, a single vote decides the game, so pick a different social deduction game.
