To win as Mafia, act like a helpful townsperson by day and choose your targets for information by night. Kill the players who are best at reasoning, not the ones accusing you. Vote in a way that never ties you to your partner, and count the numbers every morning so you know when the town can no longer catch up.
Here is how to handle each part of the game.
Your advantages, and your one weakness #
The Mafia know who everyone on their team is. The town doesn’t. You also choose who dies every night. Your weakness is the vote record: every vote you cast is public, and a smart town reviews it after each elimination. Most Mafia teams lose by leaving a trail of votes, not by lying badly.
Night: choosing who to kill #
Picking a target is the most important decision the Mafia make.
Good targets #
- The best reasoner. The player who keeps asking sharp questions and tracking votes is more dangerous than the loudest accuser.
- A likely Detective or Doctor. Players who are too sure of someone’s innocence, or who defend one player strongly, may have night information.
- Trusted players. When the town trusts someone, their suspicions carry weight. Remove that voice.
Targets to avoid #
- The player accusing you today. Killing them points straight at you. Let them be wrong in public instead.
- The obvious suspect. If the town is about to vote someone out, let them. Killing that player saves the town a vote.
- A pattern. Don’t always kill the quietest player, or always the loudest. Patterns are clues.
If there’s a Doctor, think about who they’ll protect. A claimed Detective will almost certainly be guarded tonight, so kill someone else and deal with the Detective by vote.
Day: blending in #
Talk like a villager #
- Take part. Quiet players attract suspicion. Share suspicions and ask questions like everyone else.
- Make reads you can change. “I’m not sure about Sam, but his vote yesterday was odd” gives you room to back off later.
- Don’t know too much. Avoid explaining the night’s kill in a way only the Mafia could know.
Vote without leaving a trail #
- Don’t always vote with your partner. Split your votes on days when the outcome isn’t close.
- Never be the vote that saves your partner. If your vote is the one that keeps them in the game, the town will remember.
- Vote to eliminate an innocent only when it’s already going to happen. Joining a vote that’s passing anyway looks like following the crowd, which is common for real villagers too.
- Sometimes, vote out your partner. If your partner is clearly doomed, voting against them makes you look like a villager. Players call this “bussing” (throwing a teammate under the bus). It costs one Mafia member you were losing anyway and buys you trust.
Handling a Detective’s accusation #
When a Detective claims you’re Mafia, you have a few options:
- Counterclaim. Say you’re the real Detective and give a different set of results. It’s risky, since the real Detective has consistent results, but it can split the town.
- Attack the claim. Ask for every night’s result in order. If the Detective hesitates, the town may doubt them.
- Claim a role that explains the result. If your group plays with a Miller, claiming to be the Miller (an innocent who reads as guilty) is a classic Mafia defence.
- Accept it and bus hard. If you’re caught, spend your last day making a partner’s strongest opponent look suspicious.
If you’re the Godfather, you read innocent to the Detective, so an investigation can’t catch you. Our Godfather role guide covers how to use that.
Fake-claiming safely #
- Claim Civilian most of the time. It can’t be disproven, and it doesn’t make you a target.
- Fake Doctor only late in the game. It’s hard for the real Doctor to disprove, but if the real one reveals, you’re caught.
- Fake Detective only with a plan. Invent results that clear your partner and accuse a real villager, and make sure they’re consistent with every night so far.
Working with your partner #
You can’t talk during the day, so plan in the first night and stick to it.
- Agree on targets quickly by pointing. Hesitating makes the moderator’s pauses uneven.
- Don’t defend each other too strongly. A little disagreement between you looks natural.
- No secret signals. They’re against the spirit of the game in most groups, and other players notice more than you’d think.
Count the numbers every morning #
The Mafia win when they equal or outnumber the rest of the town. Count every morning:
| Living players | Mafia | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | 2 | Keep your heads down and let the town argue |
| 6 | 2 | One more missed vote plus a kill gives you parity |
| 5 | 2 | A kill tonight brings it to 2 against 2. Survive today’s vote |
| 4 | 2 | You control the vote. You’ve won |
When one more wrong vote hands you the game, push for an elimination instead of a skip. For vote and tie rules, see Mafia voting rules.
What the town will be looking for #
The best way to beat the town is to know its playbook. Good villagers track vote pairs, watch who gets killed and who never does, and look for the deciding vote on every innocent elimination. We cover the town’s side in Mafia tips for villagers and how to spot a liar in Mafia.
One note on apps #
If your moderator uses Mafia Helper, the rules are applied exactly as written: the Godfather always reads GOOD to the Detective, the Miller always reads EVIL, and a protected target survives every time. There’s no chance of a tired moderator whispering the wrong result, so plan your claims around the real rules.
Frequently asked questions #
What is the best strategy for Mafia? #
Blend in by day and choose night targets for information. Kill the town’s best reasoners, avoid voting in lockstep with your partner, and never cast the deciding vote that saves them. Count the players every morning so you know how close you are to parity.
Who should the Mafia kill first? #
Usually the most dangerous thinker at the table, or a player who seems to have night information. Avoid killing whoever accused you that day, since the town will read the kill as a confession.
Should Mafia vote for each other? #
Sometimes. If your partner is clearly going to be voted out, voting against them makes you look like town. Never be the vote that saves them, because a smart town remembers it.
How do you fake being a villager in Mafia? #
Participate like a villager: share suspicions, ask questions and vote on the discussion. Claim Civilian if asked, since it can’t be disproven, and make reads you can adjust as new information comes in.
