Mafia and Werewolf are the same game with different stories. Both have a secret evil team that kills at night, a townspeople majority that votes by day, and a moderator who runs it all. Mafia is the original, created in Moscow in 1986. Werewolf is a retheme from 1997 that swapped gangsters for monsters and later gained its own traditional roles and many commercial card sets.
If you know how to play one, you know how to play the other.

What stays the same #
Every core rule carries over:
- Teams. An informed minority (Mafia or wolves) against an uninformed majority.
- Night. The evil team wakes, recognises each other and picks a victim. Special roles act one by one.
- Day. Everyone discusses, then votes to eliminate a suspect.
- Winning. The good side wins when every evil player is gone. The evil side wins when they equal or outnumber the rest.
- The moderator. Someone outside the game runs the night and keeps secrets.
Our how to play Mafia and Werewolf game rules guides describe the same loop in each theme.
What’s actually different #
The roles each theme brings #
Over the years, each theme picked up roles that fit its story.
Mafia roles that fit the crime theme:
- Godfather. Leads the Mafia and appears innocent to the Detective.
- Vigilante. A townsperson with a gun and limited bullets.
- Detective or Cop. Investigates one player each night.
Werewolf roles from folklore and boxed sets:
- Seer. The Werewolf name for the Detective.
- Witch. One healing potion and one poison, each used once.
- Hunter. Takes someone down with them when they die.
- Cupid. Links two players as lovers who live or die together.
- Sheriff. In The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow, the village elects a Sheriff whose vote counts as two.
Nothing stops you from mixing them. A Witch works fine in a Mafia game, and a Godfather-style werewolf leader is easy to add to Werewolf.
Commercial products #
Mafia has mostly stayed a homemade game played with paper slips or playing cards, though online versions like Town of Salem use Mafia-style teams. Werewolf became a boxed-game genre: The Werewolves of Miller’s Hollow (2001), Ultimate Werewolf (2008) and One Night Ultimate Werewolf all come with illustrated role cards. If your group likes buying a box, Werewolf has far more choice. See the best Werewolf card game sets.
Tone #
Mafia’s crime-drama tone suits office parties and groups who like playing gangsters. Werewolf’s village-and-monster tone often goes down better with families, classrooms and fantasy fans. The difference is only in the story you tell, but it changes the mood of the table.
Which one should you play? #
- Choose Mafia if you want no equipment at all, your group likes crime stories, or you’re using a regular deck of cards.
- Choose Werewolf if you own a Werewolf box, you’re playing with kids, or your group loves the Witch and Hunter.
- Choose One Night Ultimate Werewolf if you have fewer than 6 people or want 10-minute games with no moderator. See One Night Ultimate Werewolf vs Werewolf.
Playing both themes from one app #
Mafia Helper has separate Mafia and Werewolf modes, plus a Custom mode. The Mafia mode offers the Mafia, Godfather, Detective, Vigilante and Civilians alongside shared roles. The Werewolf mode swaps in Werewolves, the Seer and Villagers, and its presets lean on the Witch and Hunter. Custom mode lets you mix any of the 17 built-in roles with roles you create yourself. The app runs the night in the same wake order in every mode, so you can switch themes without relearning anything.
Frequently asked questions #
Is Werewolf the same as Mafia? #
Yes, in its rules. Werewolf is Mafia with a different theme, added by Andrew Plotkin in 1997. Over time, each version collected its own traditional roles, but the night kills, day votes and win conditions are identical.
Which came first, Mafia or Werewolf? #
Mafia. Dimitry Davidoff created it in 1986 at Moscow State University. Werewolf appeared in 1997 as a retheme of the same game.
What is the Werewolf version of the Detective? #
The Seer. Both learn one player’s alignment each night, so a Seer card and a Detective card do the same job in their own theme.
Can you mix Mafia and Werewolf roles? #
Yes. The mechanics are the same, so a Witch or Hunter works in Mafia and a Godfather works in Werewolf. Just make sure the moderator knows where each role wakes in the night.
